The Ford Transit is a commercial van planned and developed by Ford's European subsidiary in the U.S. It was launched in 1953 and is currently in production in its 8th generation, which debuted in 2014.
Hot Wheels chose the hot rod version, so to speak, based on the second-generation Transit produced from 1965 to 1978, which was built by Ford in the U.K. to promote the vehicle.
The car caused quite a stir when it was demonstrated at the 1971 Easter Meeting held at Brands Hatch (circuit) in England. The tall van form was similar to the Transit itself, although it was armed with over fenders and thick tires. However, what was surprising was what was inside. It used the engine and chassis of the Ford GT40, a racing car known for winning the Le Mans 24-hour race, and is said to have reached a top speed of 270 km/h! This time, the car is not an actual car, but is finished with a custom paint job in the style popular in the U.S. in the 1970s.
