In 1982, the Mitsubishi Pajero appeared as a pioneer of what we now call SUVs, with a station wagon-type body mounted to the chassis of a small pickup truck, the Forte 4WD. At the time, the term SUV was not yet in widespread use, and cars were often called RVs (short for recreational vehicles); the Pajero became extremely popular as a driving force behind the boom.

In 1983, Mitsubishi began participating in the Paris-Dakar Rally, which was said to be the toughest rally in the world at the time, in order to promote the Pajero. Starting with a debut win in the first year, the car has continued to win many times since changing the base to the second-generation Pajero in 1991. Since 19967, it has been required that rally cars run by automakers be based on commercial vehicles (previously prototypes that were significantly different from commercial vehicles were the norm), so Mitsubishi produced about 2,700 Pajero Evolutions, a base car for rally cars equipped with suspension, engines, aerodynamic devices, etc., that were advantageous for off-road driving.
