The general reciprocating engine generates power by the up-and-down motion of a cylindrical piston inside a cylinder. The rotary engine (RE), on the other hand, produces power through the rotational motion of a diaper-shaped piston (rotor), and it was Japanese automaker Mazda that was the first in the world to successfully commercialize the RE and at one time made it its identity.
The RX-7 was introduced in 1978 under the name Savanna RX-7 as an RE-only car, followed by the second generation in 1985 and the third generation in 1991, ending its history in 2003.
Hot Wheels chose the third generation RX-7 as its motif, which is characterized by its organic form with many curved surfaces, and is generally known as FD (FD3S) from its model (FD3S).
