PLAMATEA

The PLAMATEA series is a newer addition to Good Smile’s lineup in general, but we’ve now been receiving PLAMATEA products for around 1 year.

This series focuses on simple, easy-to-build kits that build figure-quality character models. As a series focused on character models, you won’t find mecha in the PLAMATEA lineup.

Beginning with the first release of PLAMATEA Hatsune Miku: Happy 16th Birthday Ver. in September of 2024, we’ve seen plenty of excellent releases in this series since.

The most recent preorders in the series: PLAMATEA Seeker, PLAMATEA Shirogane Noel and PLAMATEA Hatsune Miku: Chuocho all continue to showcase new ways the series can bring fun characters to life.

The Seeker from ‘Metaphor ReFantazio’ is especially the kind of non-human but not quite mecha characters that you don’t see rendered in other model kit series. The Hatsune Miku: Chuocho is a quirky and vibrant design that really suits the series, and the PLAMATEA Shirogane Noel is the first VTuber to appear in the series.

PLAMATEA is a great series for those entering the hobby looking to create a simple and fun build - so here’s some beginner recommendations!

PLAMATEA Recommendations

For Racing Miku Fans

Hatsune Miku is truly a renaissance woman - although she’s a full time performer, she also has time to be a mascot for a racing league. A new Racing Miku design drops each year and so although we’ve seen some new versions since, this design from 2023 might be an ‘all-timer.’

Illustrated by the artist who designed characters in the Atelier Ryza series Toridamono, this version of Racing Miku has a pretty fun design that I think still shines to this day. This PLAMATEA kit allows even model kit beginners to build this awesome version of the character.

For Fans of Trails Of Cold Steel

As an enjoyer of video games, I’ve had my fair share of people tell me that the Trails of Cold Steel series is a ‘must-play’ classic. Those people are probably right, and if the quality of this kit and character is any indication, they are definitely right!

If you’re already familiar with the Trails series and have a love for the mighty Arianrhod, the Steel Maiden, this is a really high quality kit of that character, packing a lot of detail into the armour design and her excellent lance-type weapon.

This kit comes with plenty of parts to display different facial expressions and poses, with or without the helmet!

PLAMAX

The PLAMAX series by Max Factory might be considered one of Good Smile Company’s flagship plastic model kit series, offering builds perhaps more advanced than the PLAMATEA series and covering a broader range of possible builds.

Within the PLAMAX series, there are various sub-series such as the PLAMAX minimum factory series, which offers minimalist builds moulded in only one color, and the PLAMAX Guilty Princess series which offers bishoujo plastic model kits of different themes and the same scale.

What PLAMAX offers is the expertise of Max Factory’s decades of product design experience combined with a huge variety of IPs!

For Cultured Individuals

From our currently available to preorder PLAMAX kits, we’re excited for the upcoming release of PLAMAX BP-02 Sophia F. Shirring: Tiger Armor version - this kit has a ‘charming’ outfit for this iconic character, Sophia F Shirring, who has appeared frequently in Good Smile figure and model kit series.

Although Sophia’s standard outfit is iconic, this Tiger Armor seems like it would be fun to build and display. If you preorder this kit, you too can look forward to building this highly cultured character design.

For Tokusatsu Fans

We just finished a detailed page about Tokusatsu for our previous Black Friday highlight page on the page, so for those of you who have an interest in Tokusatsu now, we can also highly recommend the PLAMAX Minimum Factory Shin Japan Heroes set, which features small models of iconic characters Godzilla, Ultraman, Kamen Rider and Unit 1 from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

These characters are associated via their Hideaki Anno produced reboot ‘Shin’ movies and make an excellent display piece for fans of the genre or Anno himself. As a minimalist kit, it looks especially good if you paint the kit fully.

MODEROID

If PLAMATEA is Good Smile’s character focused series, then MODEROID is more mecha focused, with kits based on a wide variety of different iconic mechanical designs from fiction.

The MODEROID series has been running long enough to boast a really stellar selection of mecha kits from both popular and more obscure series.

Looking at the MODEROID series lineup is a lot like looking at an exhibition of ‘mecha genre’ history, but much like the PLAMAX and PLAMATEA series, these kits are also supported by decades of design experience. MODEROID promises quality, so if there’s a mecha kit you’re looking to display, MODEROID might be the answer.

MODEROID kits are also excellent for customization and kit-bashing, as there is generally a consistency in how they are constructed.

MODEROID Recommendations

For Fans of Mecha History

Everyone knows that outside a certain store in Akihabara, there’s a statue of Tetsujin that’s been around for a long time. It’s there to show respect to the series as one of the originators of the ‘mecha’ genre. Now with this MODEROID kit, you too can display your own Tetsujin (after you’ve built it).

Although Tetsujin comes in many different forms, Tetsujin 28 is probably one of the most recognizable, and his shiny blue body and cheerful expression is iconic to many. Testujin’s comic began in 1956 and there have been countless adaptations of the series since.

This MODEROID kit is able to successfully adapt Tetsujin’s iconic simple and cute style in a way that stays grounded in a sense of weight and realism. For those just looking for an easy way to display this classic mecha, the MODEROID is definitely the best choice.

For Fans of The Legendary Defender, VOLTRON

VOLTRON is a series that has actually appeared in a lot of different toy lines and kit series over the years. It’s an adaptation of a classic Japanese series Beast King GoLion which features a combining mecha - several individual vehicles come together to make one awesome ‘voltron’.

The Voltron series has evolved a lot over the decades, with the most recent series, ‘Voltron: Legendary Defender’ getting over eight seasons on Netflix. It’s easily one of the most widely appreciated ‘super robot’ shows.

This MODEROID is actually based on the original VOLTRON show (and by extension Beast King GoLion) and includes all the iconic weaponry such as The Blazing Sword, Solar Combat Spears, and Spinning Laser Blade. All of the individual vehicles can be built and displayed as separate units or as one combined super robot!
