In World War II, the German Army developed and deployed a number of self-propelled artillery. The Sd.Kfz. was made by combining the III/IV chassis, developed as a chassis for self-propelled artillery, and the 8.8cm gun that demonstrated its power in anti-tank battles even on the North African front. It was originally called Hornisse, which means "wasp," but it was changed to Nashorn, which means "rhinoceros," in January 1944. Development began in 1942, equipped with PaK43/1, which is a modified version of the anti-tank gun PaK43/41, as the main gun. The chassis that combined the body and parts of the III J type and IV F type was characterized by extending the chassis and mounting the engine in the center of the hull. The prototype was completed in 1943; 494 of this vehicle were produced and deployed by March 1945.
