Description

This is an injection-plastic ship model kit.

The Derfflinger-class battlecruiser is a ship class of the Imperial German Navy, one of only three ships of its type. The German Navy classified it as a large cruiser. The design was completely new; the hull was a flat-deck type, but it had a slightly stronger shear, and the engine system was a mixed combustion engine that could burn both heavy oil and coal. Furthermore, this ship was the first German battlecruiser to use a 30.5cm gun as its main gun. By placing all the main turrets on the ship's centerline, the number of main turrets is one less than the previous class of battlecruisers, but two are placed on the bow and two on the stern, making it a good choice for an excellent shooting angle. By reducing the weight of one main turret, it was possible to increase the thickness of the armor, expand the defensive section, and increase the watertight section, making the defensive ability comparable to that of early dreadnought battleships.

Upon commissioning, the Derfflinger was assigned to Lieutenant General Franz von Hipper's 1st Reconnaissance Group. At the outbreak of World War I, she took part in the Bombardment of Scarborough in Yorkshire on Dec. 14, 1914. She then took part in the Battle of Dogger Bank, where she was hit by three shells, and hitting the Royal Navy's flagship, the Lion. On April 24, 1916, Derfflinger took part in the bombardment of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. During the Battle of Jutland on May 31, 1916, she sank the Royal Navy battlecruisers Queen Mary and Invincible, but Derfflinger herself was severely damaged by 21 hits, and it took four hours to repair. She added a command post in 1917 by converting her forward mast from a pole to a tripod mast. After Germany's defeat in World War I, she was transferred to Scapa Flow. However, she wa scuttled on June 21, 1919 by her crew, who were unwilling to surrender her to the British. The Derfflinger was salvaged in 1939, but she was not dismantled until after World War II.

This 1/700-scale full-hull model kit of the Derfflinger from Snowman Model comes with eight metal gun barrels. Order yours today!
