In 1951, Triumph's management, based in Coventry, England, decided to build a successor to the popular Type 1800/2000 Roadster. Design manager Walter Belgrove came up with a two-seater convertible with many features that were revolutionary for their time. The most eye-catching equipment was pop-up headlamps -- when they were switched off, rectangular flaps covered the headlights, giving the front end of the car a seamless look. Other features included a hydraulic jack built into the chassis, a hydraulic soft-top mechanism, and an electrically adjustable seat. A car radio was also planned to be installed, which was rare at the time. These groundbreaking features were combined with an elegant and simple body design. The doors and the soft top were covered with special plates, and the rear wheel covers were seamlessly attached to the car body. Mass production was scheduled to start in 1951, but due to a number of factors, the Triumph TR-X was never mass produced.
