Named after a type of trout, the Tullibee is a U.S. Navy offensive nuclear-powered submarine which began construction in 1958 and was put into service in 1960. In 1956, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Underwater Warfare Commission, a joint public-private sector, proposed a submarine with three features: sonar with a large detection range, a high range of quietness, and a deeper dive capability. The Tullibee was built as an offensive test ship in the 1958 plan. She served in the Sixth Fleet, which covers the eastern half of the Mediterranean and Atlantic Oceans, and was retired in 1988.
