This is a resin-cast military vehicle model kit.
The Thornycroft Mighty Antar was originally developed in 1949 as a super-heavy civilian 6x4 tractor for hauling steel pipeline sections across the Iraqi desert. It was named in honour of the Arabian Poet-warrior Antar Ibn Shadded (famed for his strength and endurance).
At the time the Antar was the largest tractor ever made in the UK and was further developed as a tank transporter for the British Army, and over a period of 35 years from the early 1950's to mid 1980's, the Mighty Antar performed all the British Army heavy haulage tasks. Whether the load was a Centurion, Conqueror, Chieftain or a host of lesser tonnage AFV's, the Antar lugged them around from A to B.
The final Mk-3 version was a major rework and incorporated the Rolls-Royce 16.2 litre C8SFL/843 diesel engine. The revised bodywork with single radiator gave a more sleek look. All the lessons learned from the early vehicles were incorporated into the Mk-3, making it a refined, reliable and professional classic.
The Antar was ultimately replaced by the equally impressive Scammell Commander, and those familiar with the Commander will see from this model how that design evolved.
This extensive 1:35th scale resin model kit by David Jane and Rob Tearle depicts the FV12006 Mk-3A Ballast Body version for towing trailers and recovery of other super-heavy vehicles. The kit comes with an etched brass detailing set, extensive full colour decals and full chassis, cab interior, engine, transmission and winch details, and an optional canvas crew shelter over the winch area. The ballast body includes a full set of weight blocks, spare wheel and davit.
