Suffering from heavy losses, Soviet tank crews had to figure out solutions to protect themselves. The main model of Panzerfaust - Panzerfaust 60, its projectile speed was 45 m/s. It functioned in a way that its warheads impacted the targets and projected a high-velocity jet of metal stream to penetrate tank armor. In order to increase protection, Soviet tank crews salvaged some bedsprings from the battlefield and welded them on the hull and turret to make improvised bedspring armor. This improvised armor was proven so effective that it could cause warheads to bounce off or detonate before it hit the armor plate. This would reduce armor damage caused by high-velocity metal jet streams. This method is still used in modern warfare. It is low cost and effective protection against sharp charge warheads. This is why some light armor vehicles are equipped with slat armor in urban battlefields.
