Description

This is an injection-plastic passenger car kit.

Virtually unchanged from the day it first went on sale, the Subaru 360 -- known by the nickname "ladybug" -- has been loved by many over the years. In 1955, the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry urged car makers to produce a "people's car," and Fuji Heavy Industries, putting some of their experience as Nakajima Airplane (what the firm was known as during WWII) to work, developed the 360. Despite its appearance, four adults can be comfortably seated and the car is extremely economical and fun to drive. Originally going on sale in 1958, the car appeared in numerous different variations, including a convertible, passenger/cargo combination model, deluxe model, and option-packed super model.

The 2nd Japan Grand Prix took place on May 2nd and 3rd, 1964, at the Suzuka circuit in Mie Prefecture. Races were divided into eleven different classes. Subaru took place in the first event on the 3rd, the T-1 class (for 400cc and smaller engines). 15 cars lined up at the start: six Subarus, four Suzulights and five Carols. Beaten badly by Suzulights in the previous year's event, Subaru set up a racing group in the firm to analyze the 360 from top to bottom and tune it into the best racer it could be. As a result of their efforts, car #9, driven by Ohkubo, stayed in first place throughout the race, with car #12, driven by Koseki, moving into second place by the fifth lap. The two cars held those positions through the checkered flag, giving Subaru a 1-2 finish.

This is a fully-detailed kit with a steerable front wheels, rubber tires, plated detail parts and white metal parts to re-create this racing variation of the car.
