Legend has it that it was during a Christmas party that off-road racer and fabricator Bill Stroppe pressured Indy car driver Parnelli Jones into giving desert racing a shot. In those days, desert trucks were built from factory stock vehicles, and as a result 1963 Indy 500 winner Jones snapped Bronco driveline parts like matchsticks. He was especially hard on the solid front axles of 4-wheel drive systems. Jones convinced Stroppe to build a 2-wheel drive version with sturdier fabricated parts, and the work paid off with a 1970 Baja 500 win.

For the next vehicle, Jones dug into his racing background and from it, Big Oly was born. Its all-tube chassis and fiberglass body meant it was built to take on the roughest terrain. In the Baja 1000 of 1971, Jones and Stroppe won the Ensenada-La Paz route in 14 hours and 59 minutes. In 1972, Big Oly won another Baja 1000. 

Big Oly set the new standard in offroad racing, and has served as inspiration for the truck builds of today.
