Description

This is a resin-cast aircraft kit.

The XB-42 is a prototype bomber developed by Douglas Aircraft in the United States during World War II. Initially, Douglas was developing the aircraft using its own funds, but in May 1943 the United States Army Air Forces took it on as insurance, in the event that the development of the B-29 failed. A development plan was presented, and two prototypes and one airframe structure tester were ordered. Since development had been progressing before receiving an order from the military, the first flight was made on May 6, 1944.

The fuselage concept aims to eliminate air resistance as much as possible, and since a towed propeller disturbs the airflow around the fuselage and increases resistance, a propulsion propeller was adopted that placed the propeller at the rear of the fuselage. In addition, the canopy, which was most distinctive from the outside, was a normal canopy that created air resistance, so the canopy was divided into two and installed side by side. By arranging the two canopies in parallel, it was intended to reduce air resistance and increase the visibility of the pilots, but it was unpopular with the pilots since they were unable to communicate quickly with each other in an emergency; this form was later abolished.

The propeller was a counter-rotating type, and the deflection of the propeller wake was offset by a combination of forward and reverse rotation, so it was possible to reduce the size of the vertical tail, reduce air resistance, and improve propeller efficiency.

In December 1944, the XB-42 set an average speed record of 704km/h in a transcontinental flight from Long Beach to Washington DC, demonstrating its high-speed performance. In spite of that, the XB-42 was never officially adopted.

The second collaboration project between Beaver Corporation and Fox One Design is a reciprocating high-speed bomber that was born in the transition between reciprocating aircraft and jet aircraft; it was only a prototype and was not officially adopted. This precisely modeled kit of the XB-42 reproduces its characteristic parallel canopy that sits side by side with transparent parts. The contra-rotating propellers are also precisely reproduced; decals are included too. Place your order today!
