----------------------------------

The Buran is a winged spaceplane developed by the former Soviet Union in the 1980s. "Buran" means "snowstorm" in Russian, specifically "steppe blizzard." Although the Buran is similar in shape to the American space shuttle, its launch system is completely different. Buran also does not have a main engine, and Energia, developed at the same time, is the payload that is carried to orbit. Energia is a large Soviet rocket equipped with four liquid-fueled booster rockets and four single-chamber engines in the center.

Because Buran does not have a main engine (the return retrorocket is mounted at the rear of the vehicle), the orbiter is lighter and can carry more load because it does not have a main engine and fuel tank, and it can re-enter the atmosphere more safely because it can slow down its speed when landing. The lack of a main engine also means that, in the event of a rocket malfunction, Energia can be detached and the vehicle can return to the runway on its own using attitude control engines, etc.

Buran was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome on November 15, 1988, and after two unmanned orbits of Earth over 206 minutes, it successfully made an automatic landing at its launch site. A manned flight was planned for 1992, but the plans were cancelled when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Similarly, production of Energia ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union, but its four liquid-fueled booster rockets have been improved, and are still being produced as the Zenit booster.

In this A Model kit, the fuselage and main wings of the Buran and Energia's fuel tank with the main rocket engine, and booster rocket, are all single FRP parts, while the other parts are made of injection plastic. A display stand and decals for one version are included. Place your order today!
