The BB-19 Barrier Boat is a small tugboat whose primary mission is port security, including the installation and movement of floating fences to prevent terrorists and operatives from entering bases from the sea. Although the vessel is small, measuring just under 5 meters in length, it is equipped with 260hp azimuth thrusters (propellers mounted on pods that rotate 360 degrees horizontally) for ample towing power and maneuverability. Originally built to collect felled logs from rivers, it was nicknamed the "Boomin' Beaver" for its operational nature. The U.S. Navy ordered 13 of these vessels for port security purposes, and has deployed them at key military ports, including Sasebo Air Base, since 2003.
