The Nine-Tailed Fox (Kyubi no Kitsune) is a fox spirit, a divine beast or "yokai," possessing nine tails. While often portrayed in Japan as an evil entity, in China, it is more frequently depicted as a divine beast sent from the heavens -- a symbol of a peaceful era, the reign of an enlightened ruler, or a mark of true kingship.

In contrast, Da Ji is a legendary beauty said to have been the catalyst for the downfall of China's ancient Shang Dynasty. The Nine-Tailed Fox is believed to have taken Da Ji's form, and in this specific interpretation, she is portrayed as a malevolent entity that beguiles the world.
