The Hopeless Diamond was a stealth aircraft proposed by the American Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in the 1970s. At the time, DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) awarded research contracts to five American aircraft manufacturers for stealth fighter aircraft. In response, Lockheed's development division, Skunk Works, proposed a polygonal, angular aircraft designed to reflect radar only in specific directions. Believing that the diamond-shaped aircraft, designed specifically for stealth, would not provide sufficient flight capability, Skunk Works gave the aircraft the pessimistic nickname "Hopeless Diamond." However, an improved version of this design, known as "Have Blue," was produced, and further refinements from this prototype lead to the development of the F-117 Nighthawk, the first operational stealth fighter in history.
