This is an injection-plastic ship model kit.
Launched in 1888, the Gymnote was the French Navy's first electric-propulsion submarine; its name is derived from Gymnotidae, the French term for a type of electric eel.
At the time of its launch, the vessel was equipped with 540 alkaline storage batteries and a 55-horsepower electric motor, allowing for a maximum surface cruising speed of eight knots. It featured a periscope and a gyrocompass, and was armed with two 355mm torpedoes.
Having completed over 2,000 dives, the Gymnote was placed in dry dock after running around and sustaining damage in 1907; however, it flooded because a valve had been left open during the docking process. As the resulting damage made repairs appear unfeasible, the vessel was sold for scrap in 1911.
This 1/144-scale model kit from Mikro Mir comes with photo-etched parts and a display stand. Place your order today!
