The Mogami class ships were born as light cruisers equipped with five 15.5cm triple guns and 15 gates, and were the top model that became a de factor "heavy cruiser" by replacing the main gun with a 20.3cm gun before the war. The Tone-class ships were unique air cruisers with all four main turrets centrally located on the bow and the rear part of the ship, used as the operating space for surface reconnaissance aircraft. The Japanese Navy completed 18 ships in six classes; these two classes built toward the end of the war showed particularly excellent performance, and they were widely active in the Pacific War, leaving their name in history.
