Drifting, a car culture that originated in the streets of Japan, started as a hobby where drivers slid the rear of FR (rear-wheel drive) cars left and right on narrow mountain roads. It has since evolved into a globally recognized motorsport competition held on race circuits.

While many competition vehicles are Japanese cars, FR cars with large-displacement V8 engines, such as the Ford Mustang, are also popular.

The Hot Wheels model is inspired by the Spec 5 drift car from RTR Motorsports, led by the charismatic American drift racer Vaughn Gittin Jr.. Equipped with a 7.1-liter V8 engine, this car is known for its dynamic performance and won the Formula Drift USA Championship in 2020.
