Dune games using automobiles became popular on the West Coast of the United States in the 1960s. The vehicles that were built to drive in the desert were collectively called dune baby carriages. The Meyers Manx was one of these vehicles. It was made by taking the chassis of a VW Type 1 (first-generation Beetle), adding front and rear dimensions, and mounting an open body made of lightweight fiberglass on top of the chassis. Many manufacturers released similar cars, but the one that stood out for its high quality was the California-based Meyers Manx made by B. F. Meyers & Co. under the leadership of Bruce Meyers. B. F. Meyers & Co. manufactured about 6,000 Meyers Manxes between 1964 and 1971, and then went out of business. The company now manufactures EV versions as well.
