The Mazda Savanna, which debuted in 1971 as a car specifically designed for the rotary engine (RE), featured a variety of body styles, including sedan, 2-door hardtop, and station wagon. However, the Savanna RX-7, released in 1978 as its successor, was streamlined into a 2-door sports car model.
The second-generation RX-7 arrived in 1985, followed by the third-generation model in 1991, where the RE engine was turbocharged, producing a maximum of 280 horsepower, the upper limit for domestic vehicles in Japan. The RX-7 gained international acclaim for its high performance and solidified its status as an iconic sports car.
Despite production ending in 2003, the RX-7's popularity continued to rise, and it is now considered a collectible car. Hot Wheels has chosen to model its car after the race version of the first-generation RX-7 from 1978, which features wide tires, overfenders, and a large front spoiler and rear wing as its distinctive characteristics.
