The 5th generation Silvia (S13 model) was introduced in 1988.
As its sister model, the 180 (one-eighty) SX debuted in 1989 with a special front mask with retractable headlights and a hatchback rear section, while using the same basic components.
As a rear-wheel-drive car with a multi-link rear suspension, it boasted high handling performance, and later became very popular as a base for modification into a drifting car.1
The 80SX remained in production with basically no major changes until 1999, when its sister car, the Silvia, switched to the 6th generation (S14 model) in 1993, and then to the 7th generation.
Hot Wheels chose the late model of the 180SX, which existed in early, mid, and late phases, as its motif, featuring a round four-light tail reminiscent of the Skyline.
