It’s difficult to be a fan of anime or mecha without having heard of the iconic Neon Genesis Evangelion series. Since its debut in 1995, the series redefined how both ‘mecha’ and anime would be considered alike. Thematically daring and complex, Evangelion utilized iconic conventions of the mecha genre in a gripping apocalyptic story about ‘EVA’ units battling beings from another world known as Angels. The series explored themes of identity and human relationships against a chaotic sci-fi dystopian backdrop and highly beloved amongst otaku.

Even after Evangelion concluded with 1999’s theatrically released ‘The End of Evangelion,’ movie, the series would continue to endure in the cultural conversation as a beloved classic. In 2007, the beginning of a reboot/retelling of the series began with the ‘new theatrical’ evangelion, starting with Evangelion 1.0, an extended remake of the series' first 6 episodes.

The ‘new theatrical’ series would continue with three additional movie releases, each one making further bold changes to the story of the beloved original series. Although the ‘Rebuild of Evangelion’ series ended with 2021’s Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0, this reimagined version of Neon Genesis Evangelion left a lasting impression with its re-interpretation of the classic show’s characters and themes.
