Description

This is a spacecraft model.

The X-20 Dyna-Soar is a space reconnaissance aircraft envisioned by the U.S. Department of Defense. Inspired by the Zenger Silbervogel anti-land bomber brought back from Germany, the U.S. Department of Defense wanted to launch this spacecraft vertically with a rocket booster by the late 1950s, and after climbing, it would skip across the upper atmosphere like a rock bouncing across the surface of a lake. A manned spacecraft was envisioned that would perform reconnaissance or bombing from space using nuclear bombs and high-resolution cameras.

This aircraft was a military aircraft, but in order to camouflage its purpose, it was given the name of X-20, designating it as an experimental and research aircraft. In 1959, it was ordered from aircraft manufacturer Boeing. A full-scale mockup of the aircraft was completed in 1961, and in 1962 six pilots were selected, including Neil Armstrong, who would later become the captain of Apollo 11.

In 1963, the X-20 was mounted on a B-52 and a gliding test was conducted; in 1966, the first launch using a Titan IIIC rocket was scheduled. However, at NASA, the Mercury Project and its development plan the Gemini Project were in the planning stages; started in 1962, the X-20 was considered ineffective against its enormous cost of about $410 million, so the plan was canceled in 1963.

The X-20 is a delta-wing aircraft with a 72-degree sweepback angle, with a winglet-like vertical stabilizer at the wing tips; the aircraft's shape was used as the basis for the European Space Agency's proposed Hermes spacecraft, and the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA)'s proposed HOPE-X was also similar.

This model kit from Mikro Mir features two types of canopy parts: a transparent one for landing, and a metal heat shield during flight. The pilot hatch and landing flaps are separate parts; a painting mask seal, a stand for in-flight display, and decals for two versions (NASA and U.S. Air Force) are included. Order yours today!
