About the Actual Vehicle:
Utilizing the chassis of the III tank, the III assault gun, equipped with a fixed combat compartment and main gun, was created primarily for close combat support of infantry.
The fixed combat compartment assault gun was easy to produce and could accommodate larger guns, leading to the production of approximately 10,000 units of various types by the end of the war.
Originally planned for infantry close combat support, the III assault gun was also called upon to serve as an emergency tank destroyer when engaging heavily armored Soviet tanks, prompting the development of vehicles equipped with a more powerful long-barreled 75mm gun.
The E model was the last version to feature a short-barreled gun, equipped with the 7.5cm StuK37 assault gun with a 24-caliber barrel.
It is reported that 272 units were produced from September 1941 to March 1942.
Deployed across various fronts, including the Eastern Front, it played a vital role in infantry support as well as in anti-tank combat.
It continued to fight valiantly until the end of the war.
