Successful armored vehicles of the Italian army
The Semovente da 75/18 or Semovente M40/M41 was an Italian assault gun used during World War II.
It was an armored fighting vehicle for infantry support, designed after the German StuG III.
Based on the chassis of the M13/40 medium tank, it was fitted with a fixed fighting compartment and a limited rotation Da 75/18 75mm howitzer, and a prototype was completed in 1941. The earliest model was named M40/da75/18, standardized, and deployed in combat.
The first 60 vehicles were manufactured using the M13/40 chassis, and the subsequent 162 vehicles were manufactured using the M14/41 chassis.
It was effective in ambushes from a low stance, had slightly thicker armor than the M13, and was welcomed for its relatively low manufacturing costs, making it the most successful combat vehicle of the Italian army during World War II.
However, these evaluations are relative, and like the base vehicle, it had many shortcomings, such as an unreliable running gear, outdated armor secured with hexagonal pointed bolts, and a gun mantlet that was prone to shot traps.
