The Punic Wars were a series of conflicts between the Roman Republic and Carthage over hegemony in the Mediterranean from the 3rd to 2nd centuries BC.
Punic is Latin for Phoenician (Carthage was a Phoenician colonial city-state), and was named by the Romans for the Carthaginians.
Three wars were fought between the Roman army landing on Sicily in 264 BC and the fall of Carthage in 146 BC.
Rome won these wars and gained naval control over the western Mediterranean and many provinces, but the prolonged wars and the influx of slaves and cheap grain from the provinces made it difficult to maintain the republic, which led to the transition to an empire.
