Italian Vespa Caproni Armored Car
The Vespa Caproni armored car was a military vehicle designed by the aircraft manufacturer Caproni in Italy. Only one prototype was produced, which underwent testing on February 2, 1942, at the Automotive Research Center. This vehicle was not mass-produced.
The initial concept aimed to equip the Italian military with a small, light, agile, and fast armored car. The Vespa Caproni could accommodate a crew of two. Its most distinctive feature was its diamond-shaped wheel arrangement: one front wheel and one rear wheel (similar to a motorcycle), with two additional wheels centrally mounted on each side of the hull. This configuration allowed for a particularly small turning radius, making it highly suitable for rapid reconnaissance and scouting missions.
The Vespa Caproni was powered by an 8-cylinder Lancia Astura engine producing 82 horsepower. It had a top speed of 86 km/h and a range of 200 km. The vehicle measured 3.90 meters in length, 2 meters in width, and 1.85 meters in height. It weighed 3.4 tons, with frontal armor thickness of 26 mm and side armor thickness of 14 mm. Its main armament consisted of an 8mm Breda 38 machine gun.
This vehicle is available as a 3D printed model kit from IDAP Technology in Poland.
