Cardinal and Duke of Richelieu Armand Jean du Plessis (Sept. 9, 1585 - Dec. 4, 1642) was a Catholic priest and politician of the Kingdom of France. Also known as the "Scarlet Cardinal," he served as chancellor of Louis XIII from 1624 until his death. Richelieu was made a cardinal in 1622, and two years later, in 1624, he was made chief minister of state. He worked hard to establish a centralized system and strengthen royal authority, and laid the foundation for the later absolute monarchy by improving the administrative organization and suspending the Estates General. From 1635, he intervened in Germany's Thirty Years War, which began with the Boehmen Rebellion in 1618, in opposition to the Habsburgs, and together with Protestant states such as England and Sweden, he sent troops to support the German princes on the Protestant side.
