The De Havilland DH-88 Comet was a twin-seat full wooden aircraft made for racing. Its fuselage contained new mechanisms of the time, such as manually retractable landing gear, trailing edge flap, variable pitch propeller, etc. It had a maximum speed of about 322km/h and a cruising distance of about 4,184km.
It was used in the long-distance McRobertson Air Race in December 1934, when it flew 11,000 miles (17,703km) between England and Australia.
