The C-46 is the largest aircraft in history equipped with twin reciprocating engines, making its first flight in 1940; 3,181 were produced from July 1942 (it was the first production aircraft in service to the U.S. Army Air Corps) until 1945. It was mainly used in the Pacific War, such as the "Hump Crossing" across the Himalayas that was carried out from 1942 to transport goods from Assam in British Indian to Kunming in the Republic of China. It played an active part as the main U.S. military transport aircraft, and was also adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps under the name of R5C. It also saw use in the Korean War, air transportation operations during the Berlin Blockade, and in the early days of the Vietnam War, and was also provided to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and the Republic of China Air Force. Several of this aircraft sold to the private sector are still being used as transport aircraft in Canada and other countries.
Operation Varsity was one of the operations on the Rhine River crossing jointly conducted by U.S. and British troops in March 1945 at the end of World War II, with the aim of sieving the Ruhr industrial zone. The Allied forces won, and were able to cross the Rhine more smoothly thereafter.
