The Barnegat class was developed as a small, inexpensive seaplane carrier for air operations over vast areas of ocean.
Thirty ships were completed as seaplane carriers and four as torpedo boat carriers.
The name ship Barnegat was commissioned in 1941, and after public trials, she operated in the North Atlantic from 1942, participated in Operation Torch in November 1942, and operated in the South Atlantic from 1943, sinking U-513 and U-199 by 1944 with her aircraft, and moved to the Pacific from February 1945.
Sold for discharge in 1946 and dismantled in 1986 as a cruise ship by a Greek private company.
