This is an injection-plastic ship model kit.
Fujimi brings us a 1/700-scale model kit of the Japanese aircraft carrier Akagi as seen at the Battle of Midway in 1942 with photo-etched parts and anti-aircraft identification markings on the deck! Both decals and stickers are included for the Hinomaru markings on the flight deck, and for the ship's nameplate. The display base comes with different parts than the regular version, with a striped wooden deck pattern. The bottom part of the ship's hull is divided by the waterline, so it can be built as either a waterline or full-hull version; the hull itself is divided into left and right parts. The hull is molded in a special gray color that imitates the warship color used at the Kure Naval Arsenal. The portholes and external electrical wiring are expressed with sharp three-dimensional carving. Fittings and structures such as fairleads are also realistically reproduced with carving. The water supply, drainage ports, and armor thickness are expressed in detail. The flight deck is made of separate steel and wooden deck parts; the wooden deck is delicately carved, making it realistic even without painting, and is deep enough to accommodate shading when painted. The elevator's eye ring is delicately carved as well. The drainage gutters and windbreak fences around the flight deck, and the truss structure on the back, are three-dimensionally rendered with intricate shapes.
The anchor deck at the bow is molded as a single piece of equipment, while the anchor chains and other features are reproduced with three-dimensional modeling. The crane rails under the flight deck at the stern are separate parts, with attention paid to details that are hard to see. Delicate parts are provided for the pillars and auxiliary pillars supporting the flight deck.
The tip of the funnel is a separate part, molded in black to reproduce the paint separation without painting, and the depth of the exhaust port is also reproduced. The bridge is slide-molded for a realistic shape; the 20cm cannons mounted on both sides of the stern are excellently sculpted, even expressing the wrinkles in the canvas.
Four types of stickers and two types of decals are included; three of the four types of stickers are pre-cut with excellent adhesion, making it easy to paint the details.
Three types of aircraft from the Battle of Midway are included: Zero Fighter, Type 99 Carrier Bomber, and Type 97 Carrier Bomber. The Zero Fighter and Type 99 Carrier Bomber are molded in light gray, and the included Hinomaru marking stickers can be applied to easily recreate the coloring. The Type 97 carrier attack planes are molded in a dark green color. Each plane is made in one piece, and three of each are included for a total of nine planes.
A black base designed with an inconspicuous straight line motif is included for display after assembly, and photo-etched parts are also included to express details that are difficult to reproduce with injection parts. The photo-etched parts include handrails, fall prevention nets, jack stays around the chimney, boat davits, fixed masts, retractable radio masts, chimney outlets, gangways, ladders, landing guidance lights, and more.
