The Vittorio Veneto-class battleships were the only new battleships built by the Italian Navy after World War I. Four ships were planned and three were completed, including Littorio and Roma.
Despite their massive size (over 40,000 tons), the class was capable of a high speed of 30 knots and had a well-balanced armament centered on nine 38cm 50-caliber main guns with high initial velocity, making them the representative modern battleship of European navies.
The first ship, Vittorio Veneto, was completed in 1940, and although damaged several times during the war, she survived the war and was discharged in 1948.
