IJN Destroyer Minegumo
The Asashio-class was a series of ten Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) fleet destroyers developed from earlier "TOKU class (special class)" destroyers and constructed under the maru-2 Supplementary Naval Expansion Budget of 1934. These ships became the basis for the later Kagero and Yugumo classes of fleet destroyer.
The keel of the IJN destroyer Minegumo was laid at Fujinagata Shipyards in March 1937, and the vessel was launched in April 1938. At the time of the outbreak of war with the Allies in December 1941, the Minegumo was assigned to the IJN's Destroyer Squadron 9. She saw action at the Battle of the Java Sea, the Battle of Midway, and as part of the high-speed convoys (known to the Allies as the "Tokyo Express") resupplying Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands, among other engagements.
While returning from a resupply run to Kolombangara Island, the Minegumo was sunk by American gunfire and torpedoes in a nighttime engagement at the Battle of Kula Gulf. She was stricken from IJN rolls on April 1, 1943.
This kit correctly reproduces its characteristic appearance with the specially prepared plastic parts for the hull. Besides, a lot of super-detailed photo etched brass parts, wooden display stand and aluminium name plate give the model incredible realism.
