The Lutzow is a battle cruiser built as the German Navy's second Derfflinger-class ship; it was named after the Prussian general Ludwig Adolf Wilhelm von Lutzow, who served during the Napoleonic Wars. She was laid down in May 1912 and completed in August 1915, but her turbine was damaged during her test run and she was commissioned into the fleet in March 1916. After commissioning, she was deployed to the First Reconnaissance Unit under the command of Admiral Franz von Hipper, and served as the flagship of the German Navy's battle cruisers. She participated in the Battle of Jutland in May 1916 with her sister ship Derfflinger, helping to sink the Royal Navy battle cruiser Invincible, but Lutzow was also hit by British torpedoes. She started to take on water at the bow, and tried to leave the battlefield in reverse in an attempt to drain; unfortunately the flooding did not stop and her screw and rudder rose above the water's surface, and it became impossible for her to move. Her crew was ordered to evacuate, and she was scuttled by a torpedo fired by G38, one of her escorts.
