This is an injection-plastic aircraft model kit.
The Vanguard was a single-seat export fighter aircraft developed and manufactured by the American company Vultee just prior to World War II. Its internal designation was V-48. The first prototype, featuring a tapered nose designed to reduce air resistance, similar to aircraft powered by liquid-cooled engines, made its maiden flight in September 1939. The Swedish military ordered 144 units of the V-48C variant, which reverted to a conventional nose shape, under the designation J10. However, the enactment of the Lend-Lease Act in 1941, occurring just after production of the order was completed, prohibited its export to Sweden.
Consequently, the U.S. military deployed approximately 50 aircraft as the P-66 to fighter training squadrons, while the remaining 100 or so units were supplied to Canada via the UK as Lend-Lease aircraft under the name Vanguard.
Although the aircraft were slated for transfer to the Republic of China Air Force following their retirement from U.S. service in February 1942, many were lost in transit accidents or during training, meaning only a small number were actually received by the National Revolutionary Army.
While some aircraft saw combat against Japanese forces, the majority were destroyed in Japanese air raids while parked on the ground; ultimately, the type was retired without having achieved significant combat success.
This 1/48-scale model kit from Dora Wings includes painting masks, photo-etched parts, and decals for four versions -- two each for the Republic of China Air Force and the U.S. Army Air Forces. Order yours today!
