The MiG-25 is a Mach 3 aircraft produced by the Soviet Union's MiG design department. It functioned as an interceptor, scout, SEAD, and training aircraft, and carried the NATO codename Foxbat.
When made public at the Tsushino Air Show it was presumed by Western nations to be the MiG-23. However, when Soviet officer Viktor Berenko defected to the Japanese city of Hakodate on September 6, 1976, it was identified by Berenko as the MiG-25.
The MiG-25RB -- the MiG-25R with added bombing ability -- became known under the NATO codename Foxbat B, while the MiG-25RBT -- the MiG-25RBK electronic scout powered by a side visual radar -- became known as the Foxbat D.
