The Club de Mer was carved into the history of American automobiles in 1956. It took several years for the General Motors Group to shape the idea of this concept car; the original idea was simply to develop a car that embodied the "future design approach." GM's designers were free to come up with ideas at their then-new "technical center." GM's president, Harley J. earl, ultimately selected one out of over 1,000 ideas. This award-winning design provided a sports car with comfort, safety, performance and aesthetics. Paul Gillan of the Pontiac design department headed the team to bring this idea to reality. This car was shown at the Motorama show and the Miami exhibition in 1956; after becoming the center of media attention, the Club de Mer was scrapped in 1958.
