LHD-2 Essex
The Wasp class assault and landing ships were built as an enlarged and strengthened version of the Tarawa class.
Compared to the previous class, the Wasp class had enhanced air operations and transport landing capabilities, and up to the eighth ship was built.
The Essex was built as the second ship of the Wasp class, launched in February 1991, and commissioned in October 1992.
She was dispatched to "Operation Tomodachi," a disaster relief and reconstruction assistance operation after the Great East Japan Earthquake, to provide relief to Oshima Island in Miyagi Prefecture, which was isolated due to damage from the tsunami.
