The USS Birmingham is the sixth Cleveland-class light cruiser. It was laid down in 1942, launched in 1942, and commissioned in 1943, and was incorporated into the Atlantic Fleet to support the Sicilian landing operation known as Operation Husky. In August of the same year, she was transferred to the Pacific Fleet, fought on the Pacific front, and participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944. She took part in the Battle of Okinawa in March 1945, and was damaged and returned to Pearl Harbor for repairs; she returned on August 1, just before the end of the war.
