The first of the Uzushio class was commissioned in 1976 as an enlarged and improved version of the Uzushio class, the Maritime Self-Defence Force's first tear-drop, single-axis propulsion submarine.
The hull of this class was extended by 4 m from the previous Uzushio class in order to accommodate various types of evolving equipment, and in addition to an increased safe diving depth and improved underwater endurance due to improved storage batteries, the ZQQ-4, the Maritime Self-Defence Force's first digital passive sonar, also improved search-and-resist capability.
In addition, harpoon anti-ship missiles can be launched from the torpedo tubes, and in addition to being equipped with a masker sound insulation system to reduce underwater radiation noise, the quietness of the ship has also been improved through the adoption of a low-revving 5-shoe skew screw propeller.
