Sputnik No. 4 was an unmanned spacecraft launched by the Soviet Union in 1960. As a preliminary step to manned flight in the Vostok program, the purpose was to verify life support systems, investigate the effects of space flight on living things, and conduct atmospheric entry experiments. For this reason, life support systems, television devices, etc. were placed inside the spacecraft. In addition to telemetry, the spacecraft also transmitted recorded human voices to conduct communication experiments with the ground. The heat-resistant shield required for returning to Earth was not developed in time, so they planned to rush it into the atmosphere and dispose of it after the mission was completed.

Launched by the Vostok rocket from Baikonur Cosmodrome on May 15, 1960, the spacecraft completed its four-day flight as scheduled. After that, it succeeded in igniting the reverse injection engine to return to Earth, but failed to re-enter the atmosphere due to an abnormality in the attitude control device. After the spacecraft stayed in orbit around the Earth for a while, it entered the atmosphere on September 5, 1962 due to the contraction of the orbit due to the resistance of Earth's atmosphere, and most of the aircraft burned up on re-entry. Some pieces of metal fell onto the city of Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
