Description
This is an injection-plastic military vehicle model kit.
The M76 Otter is an amphibious cargo transport vehicle developed in the late 1940s as a replacement for the M29 Weasel, used by the U.S. Marine Corps.
In April 1945, the Army began developing a tracked amphibious cargo transport vehicle, and by October 1947, a prototype of the T46 amphibious cargo transport vehicle was produced.
The T46 featured a boat-shaped lower body with a sealed upper body, and it was equipped with an undercarriage using air-filled tires on torsion bar suspension, along with a collapsible screw propeller.
The modified T46 prototype was renamed "T46E1," and production began in January 1951 after it passed tests that started in November 1949.
The U.S. Marine Corps' weapons division, interested in the T46E1, requested further mobility tests, which included trials in dry lakes, sand dunes, and muddy areas. In March 1953, it was officially designated as the "M76 Amphibious Cargo Transport" and given the nickname "Otter."
Originally developed for use in amphibious operations, the M76's operational area became limited to soft terrains and snowy regions after the war, as large-scale amphibious operations became rare. However, during the Vietnam War, it excelled in transporting personnel and conducting patrol missions in swampy areas due to its low ground pressure from its wide tracks.
