Red Iron Models brings us a fantastically detailed multi-media model kit of the Lunokhod 1, the first unmanned rover sent to the Moon by the Soviet Union and the first remote-controlled rover to freely move across the surface of an astronomical object beyond the Earth! It was designed to operate for only about three Earth months, but it operated for about 11 Earth months, from its landing in November 1970 to September 1971. During that time, it sent over 20,000 images and 206 high-resolution panoramic images back to Earth.

The Lunokhod 1 (Lunokhod being Russian for "walker on the moon") had a large convex lid, and was about 2.3 meters in length. It had eight independently driven tires, a conical antenna and a highly directional helical antenna, plus four TV cameras. It was also equipped with an X-ray spectrometer, an X-ray telescope, a cosmic ray detector, and a laser device. The solar cell under the lid recharged the power source battery during the moon's daytime, and during the moon's night the lid was closed and the radioisotope heater would warm the inside to the active temperature.
