The Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) was a reconnaissance and raiding unit of the British Army in World War II.
The LRDG was specifically organized to carry out deep cover operations behind Italian lines, covert reconnaissance security actions, and intelligence operations, but also occasionally engaged in combat operations.
The LRDG were so skilled in desert travel that they were sometimes assigned to guide other units, including Special Air Service (SAS) units and intelligence operatives, across the desert.
The LRDG never numbered more than 350 men, all of whom were volunteers.
When the Axis forces in Tunisia surrendered in May 1943, the LRDG changed its role and shifted its field of action to the eastern Mediterranean, conducting operations in the Greek islands, Italy, and the Balkans.
The LRDG was disbanded in August 1945.
