The E-50 was designed as a medium tank in the E Plan, which standardized tanks by weight by standardizing various components in the development of each tank, which had been extremely complicated until then, to increase productivity. The E Plan greatly exceeded the plan, and in October 1943, the mass-production system of the initial design type was established. Due to the unsatisfactory performance of the already formalized medium-sized tank V, the plan to improve the tank was abandoned, and the medium-sized tank development series continued with the E-50 in an overlapping fashion, and it was given the name "Panther."

The E-50 type has a newly developed turret that protrudes backward to exceed the armament volume limit of the Schmalturm-type turret equipped with the 7.5cm gun of the prototype vehicle, and the 8.8cm gun of the A type; automatic loading is also possible. Equipped with a 10.5cm L/52 cannon, the increased weight was replaced by a lightweight, high-output engine with a high-pressure supercharger made of "Material X" (a metal that combined the strengths of titanium and tungsten). With a sophisticated ultra-durable suspension and a body design optimized for mass production, it became a high-speed medium tank that ran around the battlefield like a light tank, despite its 150mm frontal armor comparable to that of a heavy tank.
