The Chevy Nova was born as one of the available grades in the Chevrolet II compact car that appeared in 1961. As the model change progressed, Nova came to be its main name, rather than Chevy II. Adopting a general front-engine/rear-drive mechanism, a lineup of body variations such as a two-door coupe, a hardtop, and a four-door sedan were available. A model equipped with a high-performance V8 engine was also available, and the powerful engine combined with a compact body made it popular among race aficionados. The 1964 model was the first generation, and the Super Sports Coupe was popular for its high performance coupled with a sharp, simple body style; it was often used as a base machine for street customs.
