Introduced in May 1983, the AE86 Trueno made a bold statement in an era where front-wheel drive (FF) had become the industry standard by deliberately adopting a rear-wheel drive (FR) layout. Furthermore, its engine was upgraded from the 2T-G found in previous generations to the newly developed 4A-G.

In terms of body styles -- shared with its sibling model, the Levin -- the lineup included two variations: a three-door hatchback and a two-door coupe. Model designations varied depending on the engine installed: vehicles equipped with the 4A-G were designated as the AE86, while those featuring the 1500cc 3A-U engine were classified as the AE85. The popularity of these models remains undiminished to this day.
